A true pioneer in the cruise industry, Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced a number of “firsts” – the first private out island, providing name entertainment very early on (starting in the 1980’s) as well as the first Internet cafes onboard ships. When they launched “Freestyle Cruising” in 2000, it not only offered more dining choices and flexibility for its passengers, but forever changed cruising in new ways. As Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has expanded their fleet, this has been their philosophy when designing new ships. Ships in the NCL fleet have either been designed or redesigned and retrofitted for “Freestyle Cruising.” For groups, one strong appeal is the relaxed cruise vacation experience onboard some of the most contemporary ships at sea.
In addition to offering traditional dining, Norwegian Cruise Line offers their guests up to 10 different and distinct restaurants aboard each of their ships, some with nominal surcharges. More dining choices are not the only thing Norwegian Cruise Line has helped pioneer – as part of the “Freestyle Cruising,” dress codes are relaxed (resort casual) and there is an optional formal night. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line has simplified their tipping program – gratuities are automatically added to the guest’s account, if desired, which is also being implemented by other lines.
First launched in summer of 2004, Norwegian Cruise Line began offering seven day Hawaii inter island cruises, which they continue to do today, aboard the Pride of America.
In 2010, Norwegian Cruise Line once again elevated the cruise experience with the introduction of their innovative Norwegian Epic. Their largest ship to date and accommodating 4,100 guests at 155,873 gross registered tons, the Norwegian Epic features world class entertainment including Blue Man Group, The Second City, Howl at the Moon, and Legends in Concert, in addition to Cirque Dreams & Dinner. This ship also expands some of the cutting edge accommodations NCL has been known for – their Villas Suite complex, as well as the cruise industry’s first Ice Bar at sea. And their expansive Aqua Park has the only tube slide and largest bowl slide onboard any cruise ship. They have also taken their Freestyle Dining to the next generation with more than 20 dining choices.
NCL ships sail year round to the Bahamas, Europe, Hawaii and Caribbean, as well as seasonally on Transatlantic, Pacific Coastal, Mexican Riviera and Panama Canal cruises.
